Linguistic Research

As Rerooted hosts hundreds of hours of spoken testimony with corresponding time-coded transcripts, we are a key resource for linguistic researchers trying to understand and preserve endangered dialects such as Western or Artsakhtsi Armenian.

Notably, our Syria Collection is the first ever spoken Western Armenian language corpus with corresponding transcripts. We are very honored to contribute to the Digitizing Armenian Linguistic Heritage (DALiH) project who are collecting digitized information on the Armenian language. They are working to enhance our existing transcripts and use them to develop Automatic Speech Recognition technology among other research topics. We are particularly thankful for the work of Hossep Dolatian, Samuel Chakmakjian, and Victoria Khurshudyan in these efforts.

Below please visit research based on our existing corpus as well as Hossep Dolatian’s repository acting as his workbench for slowly up transcripts from those recordings, to make them the archive be suitable as a speech corpus for work on linguistics and NLP.

3 Ways to Use Rerooted to practice your Armenian!

Open an interview from one of our collections, pick what type of skill you want to practice, and follow the instructions.

Reading Comprehension

  1. Click Armenian for the interactive transcript.

  2. Press play on the Youtube Video and choose english subtitles. Then pause.

  3. Read the interactive transcript and if you don’t know a certain word you can click the phrase and then look at the screen to see the translation in English. Otherwise, challenge yourself not to peak!

Listening Comprehension

  1. Press play on the Youtube Video and choose english subtitles.

  2. Drag up the bottom of your browser window, so you cannot see the subtitles or interactive transcript.

  3. Listen to the interview. If there is a word or phrase you don’t understand, pause the video and scroll down to see the translation. Otherwise, challenge yourself not to peak!

Reading Speed

  1. Open the interactive transcript in Armenian.

  2. Press play on the video and read along with the Armenian interactive transcript. Don’t worry about meaning of words this time! You are focusing on your reading skills being up to pace with normal conversational speed.

  3. You can pause as you need or change the playback speed on the youtube video to adjust your level.
